Boston Celtics Head Into All-Star Break in Good Position for a Strong Run

By Tim Scott | No Comments
Published on 1:21 am

The Boston Celtics head into the much needed All-Star Break with a winning record and fresh off of an impressive winning stretch where they finally showed they are capable of playing good team basketball. We’ve been waiting all season for it but the Celtics are finally starting to gel as a team. They rallied around the loss of PG Rajon Rondo and quickly rolled of a seven game winning streak that saw them defeat some big opponents like the Lakers, Heat, Clippers. The celtics are definitely in it this year as contenders. They are quite formidable opponents in that they have shown time and time again that when they are down and the chips are stacked against them…. they will now quit. This asset will be quite valuable come playoff time.

The Celtics are at a winning record of 28-24(3rd place in the Atlantic Division).Today they would qualify for a playoff position. They should be well rested with All-Star Weekend’s time off and ready to continue a second part of the season surge. Pierce and Garnett are carrying the team like the seasoned veterans that they are. However, other important role players like Jason Terry, Jeff Green, and Avery Bradley have stepped up especially in the area of team defense.

Their team defense allowed them to shut down the Chicago Bulls in their final game before the All-Star Game, the bulls were held to under 80 points and the Celtics still won despite only scoring 8 points themselves in the 3rd quarter. Fatigue is obviously a problem for the battered team as the Celtics also dropped a close game to the Charlotte Bobcats earlier in the busy week.

Doc Rivers’ coaching job with this year’s Celtics is nothing short of amazing. They lose an All- Star point guard and still win. Trade rumors swirl around the team yet they still produce. new younger players step it up and show the skills they’ve got when many denied that they should even be on the team. And need I mention on top of all of this…Coach Rivers leads the team through the transition and loss of Hall of Famer Ray Allen. Incredible! To top it off when the champion Heat and Allen came into Boston they left without a win!!!

Garnett will start what he says will be his last All-Star Game. Rondo would have been starting alongside him if not for the injury. Enjoy the All-Star Game and all it’s fun fellows but when you come back remember you are re-joining an ambitious basketball team that is looking to do nothing short of capture banner #18 for the Boston Celtics!!! Where Do The Celtics Go From Here?

By kenfenderson | 1 Comment
Published on 11:51 pm

Doris Burke dropped a stone on the heart of Celtics fans everywhere during Sunday afternoon’s nationally televised Celtics-Heat game. Shortly after halftime, she confirmed reports that Celtics point guard and All-Star starter Rajon Rondo has torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. The Celtics were able to pull out an exhilarating double-overtime victory over their bitter rivals in Ray Allen’s return to Boston, but the excitement from the win was short lived.

While the coaching staff was already aware of the situation, the players had not been told of Rondo’s condition during the game. Paul Pierce was the first to find out when he was informed of the prognosis by Burke during a post-game interview. The look on his face said it all. The Celtics are going to feel the loss of their point guard on and off of the court. One glaring concern is the lack of another facilitating point guard on Boston’s roster. There has been a very distinct difference in the C’s half-court offense this season when Rondo isn’t in the game, and, for the most part, not in a good way.

You may be asking yourself, “Well how did they manage to win today if that’s the case?”. Brace yourself: DEFENSE. The Celtics got back to the team identity that fans in this region have come to love over the last five years. The offense was a product of their defense today. Steals and rebounds lead to transition buckets for the green team. The Celtics have now shown us all that they are capable of playing with anybody, but they’ve also placed the ownness on themselves. Now that we’ve seen them get it done once, it’s up to them to prove that they can do it again, and again, and again. If you can beat the best of the best, the defending NBA champions, without a player of Rajon Rondo’s caliber, you should be able to ride a weak Eastern Conference slate to the playoffs. It’s up to Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to pull this team in the right direction now, and it’s their turn, once again, to return “Celtic Pride” to the NBA’s most storied franchise. Defense needs to be a priority, and it’s pretty clear that hasn’t been the case for much of this season. We’re going to see if the team still has a little of least year’s “grit and balls” left over.

Rajon Rondo’s injury will have a major impact on this team one way or another. It will either end their chances at a title prematurely, or it will make them the scrappy, competitive underdog that nobody wants a part of come April.

Boston Celtics Report Card

The Boston Celtics Record

The Celtics are 11-9, currently the 7th seed in the East.  Not a prototypical season for a team expected to do big things come playoff time. Good news for the Celtics is that they have won 2 of their last 3 games, and have been in close games when they do lose.  The Celtics are also currently ranked 2nd in the league in Assists Per Game and are averaging about 98 Points per game.  This is the first time we have seen a Celtics team average that much PPG since 2008.  The problem with the Celtics this year is that they aren’t the top defensive team in the league anymore.  They pay small ball, and you’re going to give up a decent amount of points playing small ball.  The Celtics started 26th in Points allowed.  But now they are 12th in the league in Points Allowed, so they are making an improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Think the Celtics can go all the way? Betting is easy with the Bovada sportsbook review. Just use your Bovada referral number. I expect the Celtics record to get much better during the next couple of weeks, they are headed for a turnaround.

Rajon Rondo

Rondo is leading the league in assists, hitting his outside shots, and leading a confused Celtics team full of potential.  Rondo has been a man on a mission when it comes to racking up assists at 12.8 per game. Only two things have been able to stop him from hitting double-digits: an unfortunate altercation with Kris Humphries and the ensuing two-game suspension.

While his playmaking is unparalleled  it’s also helping overshadow another important aspect of Rondo’s improvement. His mid-range game and outside jumper have improved dramtatically. Taking 3.4 attempts per game from 16 to 23 feet, Rondo has made 49 percent of his attempts from that range.  Only Kyrie Irving and Luke Ridnour are better from 16 to 23 feet.

The only thing keeping Rajon Rondo away from an A+ for me is his suspensions!

Jason Terry

The new addition of 6th man/starter Jason Terry has been so-so.  At times, I see the Jet taking off with his emotion and shooting us back into a game.  But mostly this season, Terry, especially early in the year, has shot our team out of the game.  HIs percentages have increased though since the start of the season, and he is now averaging a respectable 12 points per game on 38% shooting from three.  Expect those numbers to rise.

Paul Pierce

I’m not sure what to think of Paul Pierce’s production this year.  His numbers are 19 PPG 4APG and 5.5RPG, but he’s only shooting 41% from the field.  I think  Paul has been forcing it a bit too much, but I doubt this will continue.

Brandon Bass

Bass has not impressed me this year at all.  I lvoe the guy, but he MUST contninue to hit that little Mid-Range jumper consitently or we need to give the statting job to Sully or Wilcox, because both of those men have impressed me more than Bass at least early in teh season.

Kevin Garnett

KG has been a solid contributor on a team that might be finally gelling.  His steady contributions have been key to the Celtics being 2 games over 500.

Jeff Green

At times Green has looked extremely impressive, reminding me of shades of James Worthy. I mean check out this monster jam,

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dtSR33A42A']

At other times, he looks like a shy player on the court, straying away from contact and settling for outside jumpers.  I beleive Jeff Green is starting to get it, and I know he will continue to improve.  Let’s not forget this is his first time playing ccompetive NBA basketball in almost 2 years!

Robert Parish Selling More Bling

By Stephen Varnum | No Comments

During his illustrious career, Robert Parish earned 4 championship rings and is consdiered one of the 50 greatest players of all time. His unusual jumpshot and defensive prowess earned him respect throughout the NBA.  Now, Mr. Parish is apparently in need of some cash and is selling his 1986 champinship ring. Click this link if you are trying to get it or see pics of the ring, Chief. If your watching the Celtics games you can also check out and bet on Boston sports online. Last June, The Chief auctioned off his 1981 ring and apparently made bank, so he’s doing it again!

Fab Melo, Kris Joseph Sent to D-League

By Matt Davis | No Comments
Published on 5:51 pm

The Celtics announced today that rookies Fab Melo and Kris Joseph have been sent to the D-League.

The team stated:

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have assigned forward Kris Joseph and center Fab Melo to their NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

Melo, a 7’0 center, appeared in all eight preseason games for the Celtics and averaged 1.3 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game. Melo was drafted by the Celtics with the 22nd pick in the 2012 NBA Draft out of Syracuse University where he averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks and shot 56.6% from the field in his sophomore season before entering the draft.

Joseph, a 6’7 forward, made his NBA debut against the Milwaukee Bucks and recorded one rebound and one assist in three minutes of action on November 2. He had averaged 4.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10.8 minutes during the eight preseason games earlier this year. Joseph was drafted by the Celtics with the 51st overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Syracuse University. During his senior season for Syracuse he averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. Both rookies have shown that they have potential and will be able to produce in the NBA one day, however, with the Celtics in win-now mode and Doc tightening the rotation, there simply aren’t enough minutes to go around and no time to waste trying to give

Melo and Joseph were also teammates at Syracuse

these guys time to develop. If anything it would be a disservice to them and their development to keep them riding the bench all season. In the D-League they’ll be able to get a ton of experience and a ton of reps. Hopefully they’ll be able to harness some of that potential, especially Fab Melo. As a 1st round pick there’s quite a bit of hype around Melo and the Celtics will look to him to live up to that. Melo is a raw player, but with his size and athleticism, in a size depleted league, he could carve out a very nice career. It’s also very beneficial that the Celtics control the Maine Red Claws because they’ll be playing in the Celtics system. Taking over basketball operations for the Red Claws continues to look like a very wise move by Boston. If Doc Rivers needs these guys down the stretch, for whatever reason, he’ll be able to call them up, but until then good luck to Melo and Joseph in working to improve their respective games.

Celtics Hang on against Wizards 89-86

By Shannon Brown | No Comments
Published on 2:37 am

It took a Paul Pierce 3 and a couple of free throws from Jason Terry, but the Celtics held on and got their first victory of the season.  The Celtics, who came off a sluggish performance against the Bucks Friday night 99-88, were able to go up by 16 and then withstand a charge from the Wizards bench to close out the game and get the victory.  The Celtics led by as many as 16 points but the Wizards bench blew out the Celtics bench, as they were outscored 62-27.  Leading the way was Jordan Crawford who had 21 points off the bench, Kevin Seraphin who proved to be close to unstoppable he had 19 pts on 8-9 shooting.  Paul Pierce led the way for the Celtics with 27 pts including a 3 pointer that put the C’s up 87-86.  A Wizards turnover allowed the Celtics to get the ball back and Terry hit two FT’s to put the Celtics up by 3.  The Wizards got the ball back with 5 seconds left and threw up a shot but it didn’t even touch the rim and the Celtics got the win.

The Celtics started the game leading 17-2 as their defense was in sync and the shots were falling, unlike Friday when they couldn’t hit a shot.  Boston would close out the first quarter to lead 26-12,but the Wizards would start to chip at the lead and get back into the game led by the combo of Crawford and Seraphin.  It was only in the fourth quarter that the Celtics were able to build the lead back up to 11 when Crawford had to leave with a sprained ankle, he would return later in the quarter.  As soon as Crawford came the Celtics lead shrunk to just 1 and they Wizards took the lead at 86-84.  The lead wouldn’t last long as Paul Pierce came back and nailed a 3 that would put the Celtics back up for good.

Yes, the Celtics were up by 16 but you have to look at the positives, remember last season how awful the Celtics were when the y played back to back games.  Also despite giving up the lead the C’s looked good and seemed like they are turning into the team we thought they were.  Giving up 86 points is a good defensive win even if it was against the Wizards, keep in mind they gave up 99 to the Bucks who are about on the same level as the Wizards.  Also, we saw the one of the different lineups Doc is going to use as he started Jared Sullinger over Brandon Bass.  Sullinger rewarded Doc with 4 pts, 7 rebs and a block.

Jeff Green led the second unit with 11 points and looked a lot more aggressive then he did in the past two games.  Jason Terry still looks like he is settling in with his new team, but you can live with that because eventually the shots will fall.  The main focus of tonight’s win is the Celtics defense they were rebounding and causing turnovers.  The transition defense wasn’t perfect but was an improvement over the last couple of games.  Also the Celtics only turned the ball over 9 times compared to 15 by the Wizards.  The Celtics travel back to Boston to face the Wizards again on Wednesday Nov. 7 at 7:30 pm.

3 Keys vs Bucks

By Matt Davis | No Comments
Published on 5:33 pm

Tonight the Celtics have their home opener at the Garden as they host the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:30PM Eastern. The Celtics endured a rough game against the Heat in the season opener, falling 120-107. In that loss, the Celtics looked just how a team that added several new faces in the offseason should look: Dysfunctional and Inconsistent. There were several miscues on both sides of the floor. The offense, although looked incredible in transition, looked stagnant at times. The C’s have undeniably gotten deeper and arguably have more offensive weapons than ever before during this new era. However, against the Heat, it looked like they had trouble using those weapons and maximizing them to their full potential. This is a problem that will almost certainly be solved as the season goes on. On defense the Celtics suffered several breakdowns and missed rotations. It just didn’t look like the in-sync defense that the Celtics faithful have grown accustomed to watching over the past years. The key right now is patience, as these problems will resolve themselves as the season goes on. Doc Rivers will have this team ready, and don’t forget, the first game was against the Miami Heat.

Nevertheless, here are 3 keys to watch for during the Celtics home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks

1. Jeff Green

Let’s be honest, Jeff Green looked like a lost player against Miami. He was tentative on offense and got dominated on defense. He looked like a shell of the aggressive player we all saw in the preseason. Giving Green some benefit of the doubt, it was his first meaningful game in over a year, and that matchup did come against the best player in the world in LeBron James. However, Green did sign a 4-year $36 million deal this offseason. He has to live up to that contract and posting 3pts and 3rebs over 23 minutes without registering a field goal is not acceptable.

Tonight against the Bucks poses a much more favorable matchup for Green, which sets a great stage for him to breakout. If he doesn’t produce, it’s not the end of the world, but if he continues to underproduce, it might be time to hit the panic button.

2. Defense

The Celtics defense was atrocious versus the Heat. In the past, defense has been Boston’s identity and pillar of success. On Tuesday, the defense was on their heels throughout the whole game. As written above, defensive continuity will take time, but it is definitely something to keep an eye out for tonight. It will be interesting to see how the defense bottles up the dynamic duo of Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis. The outcome of that matchup could serve as a great building block.

3. KG’s Offense

Last year against the Heat in the playoffs, KG was the focal point of the offense. In the season opener, it seemed as though KG was never a first scoring option and that really threw the Celtics off. Last season and in the playoffs, KG thrived running the pick-n-pop with Rondo, consistently knocking down the mid-range to long jump shot. I can’t remember that play being ran one time on Tuesday night. Tonight against the Bucks, look for the Celtics to get back to that and try to get KG back in his groove. When KG’s jumper is falling, the Celtics offense becomes deadly, this year especially because of all the new additions.

There should be a lot of energy in the arena tonight. It’s early in the season but it will be very interesting to see how this team progresses and comes together throughout the season. It definitely hurt to drop the opener to the Heat, but Celtics Nation knows that the C’s will be much more ready for that matchup the next time around. My faith is in Doc Rivers.

Celtics Fall to Heat 120-107

By Shannon Brown | No Comments
Published on 3:37 am

Well, luckily its only one game and there’s 81 more to go, that look on Doc Rivers face about sums up tonight’s season openers loss.  The Celtics fell to the Heat in the season opener 120-107 with most of the damage coming from ex Celtics player Ray Allen.  Allen struck first blood in game 1 of 4 against his former team; off the bench Allen had 19 points in 30 mins of play.  Ray Allen who entered to a standing ovation from the Miami fans received hugs and hi fives from former teammates except for one person…KG.  As Ray made his way over to KG, Ray was served with a big plate of cold shoulder and a glare from Garnett.  He then went and hit his first 3 for the Heat and was praised with chants of “We Love Ray” from the Heat fans.

It was an emotional game for both sides as the Celtics were facing a man they once called brother who went and signed with the team that knocked them from the playoffs the last two season.  Ray spent the weeks leading up to the season taking shots at his former team saying he was pushed out.  For the Heat they got to raise their championship banner and receive their rings the Celtics however didn’t feel like celebrating as they stayed in the locker room.  Boston came in with new players in Jason Terry, Courtney Lee, Jared Sullinger, Leandro Barbosa and Jeff Green who was coming off heart surgery.  And while they looked good at times, they also looked bad at times.  Now like I said before it was just one game and it will take some time to get chemistry and everyone on the same page.  When players get comfortable in their roles and adjust to mixing with the first team and second team offense, Boston will be a dangerous team this year.  Jason Terry and Jeff Green had forgettable performances but that to will change as the season progress, for Terry when he adjusts to his new teammates he will be the sixth man that the Celtics have wanted for a long time.  For Green he looked more like the scared Jeff Green from two years ago then the player who had a great preseason who showed a lot of promise.

The Celtics were mainly decimated on the defensive side as bad transition defense and lack of help defense lead to the Heat leading by as many as 19 points. Also the one thing that has plagued Boston over the years reared its ugly head again and that was turnovers Boston had 10 at the end of the first half and 15 overall which is one thing you don’t want to do against the Heat.  When Boston was able to lock down their defense in the 4th they were able to cut the lead down to 6 but it was too little to late by then.  Leandro Barbosa was a monster in the 4th quarter which led to Boston mini attempt at a comeback, Barbosa scored all of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.  That’s one thing you can be happy with cause last year the Celtics bench averaged less than 16 points a game.  Courtney Lee looked good in his debut aside from picking up 5 fouls, but he looks like a good replacement for Ray Allen also keep in mind Bradley is still hurt as well but once he is back Boston will be the team it wants to be and then some.

Rajon Rondo picked up where he left off getting another double double with 20 points and 13 assists (he had 8 in the first half), Paul Pierce led the way with 23 points.  Pierce who last year suffered a MCL sprain looked really good as he was driving to the basket and getting to the line like the Pierce of old instead of settling for jump shots.  Lebron and Dwayne Wade led the way for the Heat, Lebron who left in the fourth and didn’t return cause of leg cramps had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Wade added 29 points of his own.  Over all Miami’s big 3 outplayed Boston’s big 3.  The trio of James/Wade/Bosh had 74 points and 23 rebounds while the trio of Rondo/Pierce/Garnett had 52 points and 24 rebounds, add in Ray Allen’s 19 and Rashard Lewis 10 points and you see why Boston had a very un-Boston like performance.  Very rarely do the Celtics give up over 100 points in a game, actually a typical Celtics vs. Heat game score would be in the low 80′s. The Celtics will have the next two days off to stew over this loss and then it’s their home opener on Friday against the Bucks.  Expect a much improved and motivated Boston team to show up and be ready to put this loss behind them.
