Fab Melo, Kris Joseph Sent to D-League

The Celtics announced today that rookies Fab Melo and Kris Joseph have been sent to the D-League.

The team stated:

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have assigned forward Kris Joseph and center Fab Melo to their NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

Melo, a 7’0 center, appeared in all eight preseason games for the Celtics and averaged 1.3 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per game. Melo was drafted by the Celtics with the 22nd pick in the 2012 NBA Draft out of Syracuse University where he averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks and shot 56.6% from the field in his sophomore season before entering the draft.

Joseph, a 6’7 forward, made his NBA debut against the Milwaukee Bucks and recorded one rebound and one assist in three minutes of action on November 2. He had averaged 4.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10.8 minutes during the eight preseason games earlier this year. Joseph was drafted by the Celtics with the 51st overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Syracuse University. During his senior season for Syracuse he averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. Both rookies have shown that they have potential and will be able to produce in the NBA one day, however, with the Celtics in win-now mode and Doc tightening the rotation, there simply aren’t enough minutes to go around and no time to waste trying to give

Melo and Joseph were also teammates at Syracuse

these guys time to develop. If anything it would be a disservice to them and their development to keep them riding the bench all season. In the D-League they’ll be able to get a ton of experience and a ton of reps. Hopefully they’ll be able to harness some of that potential, especially Fab Melo. As a 1st round pick there’s quite a bit of hype around Melo and the Celtics will look to him to live up to that. Melo is a raw player, but with his size and athleticism, in a size depleted league, he could carve out a very nice career. It’s also very beneficial that the Celtics control the Maine Red Claws because they’ll be playing in the Celtics system. Taking over basketball operations for the Red Claws continues to look like a very wise move by Boston. If Doc Rivers needs these guys down the stretch, for whatever reason, he’ll be able to call them up, but until then good luck to Melo and Joseph in working to improve their respective games.
