It took a Paul Pierce 3 and a couple of free throws from Jason Terry, but the Celtics held on and got their first victory of the season. The Celtics, who came off a sluggish performance against the Bucks Friday night 99-88, were able to go up by 16 and then withstand a charge from the Wizards bench to close out the game and get the victory. The Celtics led by as many as 16 points but the Wizards bench blew out the Celtics bench, as they were outscored 62-27. Leading the way was Jordan Crawford who had 21 points off the bench, Kevin Seraphin who proved to be close to unstoppable he had 19 pts on 8-9 shooting. Paul Pierce led the way for the Celtics with 27 pts including a 3 pointer that put the C’s up 87-86. A Wizards turnover allowed the Celtics to get the ball back and Terry hit two FT’s to put the Celtics up by 3. The Wizards got the ball back with 5 seconds left and threw up a shot but it didn’t even touch the rim and the Celtics got the win.
The Celtics started the game leading 17-2 as their defense was in sync and the shots were falling, unlike Friday when they couldn’t hit a shot. Boston would close out the first quarter to lead 26-12,but the Wizards would start to chip at the lead and get back into the game led by the combo of Crawford and Seraphin. It was only in the fourth quarter that the Celtics were able to build the lead back up to 11 when Crawford had to leave with a sprained ankle, he would return later in the quarter. As soon as Crawford came the Celtics lead shrunk to just 1 and they Wizards took the lead at 86-84. The lead wouldn’t last long as Paul Pierce came back and nailed a 3 that would put the Celtics back up for good.
Yes, the Celtics were up by 16 but you have to look at the positives, remember last season how awful the Celtics were when the y played back to back games. Also despite giving up the lead the C’s looked good and seemed like they are turning into the team we thought they were. Giving up 86 points is a good defensive win even if it was against the Wizards, keep in mind they gave up 99 to the Bucks who are about on the same level as the Wizards. Also, we saw the one of the different lineups Doc is going to use as he started Jared Sullinger over Brandon Bass. Sullinger rewarded Doc with 4 pts, 7 rebs and a block.
Jeff Green led the second unit with 11 points and looked a lot more aggressive then he did in the past two games. Jason Terry still looks like he is settling in with his new team, but you can live with that because eventually the shots will fall. The main focus of tonight’s win is the Celtics defense they were rebounding and causing turnovers. The transition defense wasn’t perfect but was an improvement over the last couple of games. Also the Celtics only turned the ball over 9 times compared to 15 by the Wizards. The Celtics travel back to Boston to face the Wizards again on Wednesday Nov. 7 at 7:30 pm.
