GameDay Boston

Celtics Await Allen’s Decision

We are now into day 6 in the NBA free agent period and it’s been quite a frenzy.  For the Celtics Christmas came a day early when Kevin Garnett verbally agreed to a 3 year deal, then they were able to sign their three draft picks Jared Sullinger, Fab Melo and Kris Joseph.  Next for the Celtics they got a verbal agreement from Jason Terry to come to Boston on a 3 year deal, and then yesterday they got a commitment from Brandon Bass to come back on a yep you guessed it 3 year deal.  Sources say the Celtics have reached an agreement with Jeff Green its reported to be a 4 year deal worth up to $40 million,  but the there is still one free agent that the Celtics hope to have back he just hasn’t made a decision yet.

The Celtics would love it if they could have the third piece of their Big 3 back in a Celtics uniform but it remains to be seen.  Allen met with the Heat last night and was supposed to meet with the Clippers today, but after they signed Jamal Crawford and Chauncey Billups they canceled their meeting.  A third team has emerged it was reported that the Minnesota Timberwolves have shown interest but don’t have Ray at the top of their wish list.

Yesterday LeBron took to Twitter to persuade Allen to come to the Heat, he tweeted a photo showing the all-time 3 point leader in an ugly Heat uniform.  The Celtics have shown that Ray Allen is their top priority they have doubled the money that the Heat are offering and even told Allen that they would put a no trade clause in his contract.  What remains to be seen is are the Celtics going to offer Allen a 3rd year on his contract, it has been reported that the Heat went to a 3 year 9 million dollar deal.

It has been noted that the relationship between Rondo and Allen hasn’t been that best, but what Allen can’t deny is that they have chemistry on the court.  Allen also has a close relationship with Garnett and Pierce and Coach Rivers, so it would be tough to walk away from that after 5 years of playing together and winning a championship.  I find it hard to believe that Allen would walk away from Boston just to come off the bench for the team that has eliminated him the past two seasons but crazier things have happened.  I’m sure the signing of Terry doesn’t help Ray in his decision to return as it would cut into his minutes and role on the team.  But if he were to return the Celtics would be a stacked team with a starting lineup that would look like:

PG. Rajon Rondo

G. Avery Bradley

SF. Paul Pierce

PF. Brandon Bass

C. Kevin Garnett

And a much improved bench that would look like:

PG. Jason Terry

SG: Ray Allen

SF. Jeff Green/ Kris Joseph

PF. Jared Sullinger/ Jajuan Johnson

C. Fab Melo/ Greg Stiesmsa (if re-signed)

However, all we can do is wait to see what Ray wants to do and hope he makes a decision soon and hopefully it’s to remain in Boston.
